Science

Intent

We aim to develop curious, confident and knowledgeable young scientists who have a sense of wonder about the world around them. Our science curriculum provides children with the knowledge, vocabulary and skills they need to understand the world and think scientifically.

Children are encouraged to ask questions, explore ideas, investigate, solve problems and use evidence to develop their understanding. We want them to recognise the importance of science in everyday life and appreciate how scientific knowledge helps us understand and care for the world around us.

Implementation

Science is taught through a carefully sequenced and progressive curriculum, building on children’s prior learning and developing their knowledge and understanding over time.

Children experience a balance of scientific knowledge and practical enquiry, with regular opportunities to:

  • Ask questions and make predictions
  • Observe, explore and investigate
  • Carry out practical experiments safely
  • Gather, record and interpret evidence
  • Identify patterns, similarities and differences
  • Use scientific vocabulary accurately
  • Explain ideas, draw conclusions and communicate findings

Teachers use questioning, discussion, practical experiences, retrieval and assessment to deepen understanding and address misconceptions. Children are encouraged to make connections between different areas of science, their wider curriculum learning and the world around them.

From the Early Years onwards, children develop their ability to observe, explore and ask questions, with their scientific knowledge and enquiry skills becoming increasingly independent as they progress through school.

Impact

Our science curriculum enables children to develop a secure and well-connected body of scientific knowledge, alongside the skills and confidence to work scientifically and apply their learning in new contexts.

Through assessment, pupil voice, work scrutiny and classroom observation, we monitor children’s knowledge, vocabulary and enquiry skills. We want children to remember more, understand more and confidently apply what they have learned.

By the end of primary school, children will be able to:

  • Ask meaningful scientific questions
  • Use scientific vocabulary confidently and accurately
  • Plan and carry out investigations safely
  • Use evidence to explain their ideas and draw conclusions
  • Make connections between different areas of science
  • Think critically and recognise that scientific ideas can be tested and developed
  • Understand the importance of science in everyday life and the wider world

Ultimately, we want our children to leave us as curious, resilient and confident young scientists, ready to continue questioning, exploring and making sense of the world around them.
